SOUTHERN LEAGUE: Parsons and Jones link-up pays dividends for Supermarine

IF SATURDAY’S 3-1 win at Cinderford is anything to go by, Josh Parsons and Matty Jones have a pretty decent understanding on the football pitch.
Free-scoring Parsons grabbed all three Marine goals, although by his own admission he knew little about the first one, with Jones the architect of them all.
Saturday’s game was the first time the two players had pulled on a Marine shirt together, following Jones’ loan arrival from Swindon Town the previous day, but the pint-sized frontman is evidently pleased to have the wing back around.
“It was a good win for us today and obviously it was good for me to score a hat-trick,” Parsons told the Advertiser.
“For the first one they didn’t give it to be initially but Matty (Jones) got the ball from a throw and had a shot and, although it was going wide, I diverted it in off my arm. It was probably hand ball as well but you take them all.
“The second one was from Matty Jones as well and he got the ball and crossed it into the back stick and I tapped it in, and the third one he played it over the top and I slotted it in.
“Matty is a really good player and you can tell him and Alex (Ferguson, also on loan from Swindon) train every day because they are really quite fit.
“If Matty keeps playing for us I can see myself scoring a load more goals.”
Marine faced a difficult afternoon in Gloucestershire, against a physical Cinderford side, but Parsons was pleased with the way he and his teammates negotiated the challenge while playing an unfamiliar formation.
“Cinderford are not a bad team and they are pretty physical, trying to bully you off the ball, but we went there with a 3-5-2 formation and it really seemed to work for,” he said.
“Every game at this time of the season is really important because if you don’t win there will be someone else ready to punish you for it.
“We just need to keep on playing and keep winning and see where it gets us.”
