SUNDAY LEAGUE: English goal puts Gas into final as Northmore is Cheney’s hero
AFC Gas and Cheney FC will contest the final of the Swindon Sunday League Knockout Cup after two dramatic semi-final victories.
Division One side Gas were 1-0 victors over New Century thanks to a Sam English goal mid-way through the second period, while Cheney had to rely on penalties to get past fellow Division Three side KC Globe after their game finished 3-3 at the end of extra time.
Gas boss Alan Blake was impressed with the standard of football on display from both teams and wasn’t surprised just a single goal proved to be the difference.
“It was a really good game which was a pleasure to be a part of,” he said.
“There were two really good teams on the pitch, both having a real go at each other and I am really pleased we were able to come out on top in the end.
“We played well and scored a good goal and we’re just looking forward to the final now.
“It’s always good to play in a final and we will be going all out to get the win.”
Goalkeeper Jordan Northmore was the hero for Cheney as he saved a Globe penalty in normal time before stopping a further two in the shootout, while a brace from Shane Hibbert and one from Aaron Welland ensured Cheney made it into the penalty competition.
Paul Morrison, joint boss of Cheney, knows his side will be massive underdogs when the final comes around but is just thrilled to have the chance to compete for some silverware.
“After we won on penalties all of the players and some of the supporters bundled on top of the goalkeeper, it was a brilliant feeling,” he said.
“We have been in the same league as Globe since the team started in Division Seven four years ago and have never beaten them before so to do it in a cup semi-final is amazing.
“We know we will be massive underdogs for the final but that’s okay with us because we just can’t wait to be a part of it all.”
