WOOTTON Bassett claimed the point they needed to secure the league title following their 3-3 draw away at Swindon A.

Swindon immediately piled on the pressure with an impressive opening passage of play but Bassett held strong and, despite Swindon's domination of the possession statistics, limited their hosts to only half chances.

As the half wore on Wootton Bassett worked their way into the game and created a number of chances in front of goal but found Swindon's keeper in great form to keep them out. Eventually a penalty corner came Wootton Bassett's way and Mark Turner made no mistake in slapping the ball home to take the lead.

As half time approached Wootton Bassett went in search of a second. A tangle on the edge of the Swindon semi circle left a Bassett player on the floor and Swindon broke quickly to level the scores just before half time.

Swindon took the early initiative in the second half, scoring two quick goals to put them 3 - 1 ahead, but Bassett ramped up the pressure and won a string of penalty corners but could not make them count.

With 15 minutes remaining Mark Tolley threaded a ball through to Kyle Barnes. Barnes picked out Kristian Mansfield at the top of the circle and Mansfield coolly slotted the ball home.

Almost immediately after Barnes added the equalising goal, wrong footing the goalkeeper from a short corner.

As the final whistle approached Jack Twine and Barnes had chances to add the winner but Bassett were happy with the point they needed to claim the league title.

The club’s ladies also had to make do with just a point as they drew 2-2 with Westberries.

Wootton Bassett Ladies ground out a 2-2 draw against Westberries.

Bassett were able to soak up Westberries’ attack until a well-worked short corner was deflected into the top corner of the goal.

Bassett hit back though, with Emma Collison showing dexterity and flair to hit the ball between her own legs and into the goal.

Further Bassett pressure led to a short corner which was clinically dispatched by Helen Wright to make the half time score 2-1 in favour of the hosts.

Without any substitutes to maintain fresh legs, Bassett tired and eventually succumbed to a scrappy Westberries goal to level the match.

Bassett Ladies A faced top of the league Chippenham B, with both teams unbeaten in league action this year.

Player of the match, goalkeeper Laura Brown, made a number of saves and the teams couldn't be split with the match ending 0-0.
