HELLENIC LEAGUE: No light touch in cup for Wootton Bassett
WOOTTON Bassett Town manager Jeff Roberts is hoping to avoid a cup upset when they entertain Penn and Tylers Green in the third round of the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup.
With Bassett sitting comfortably in mid-table in Hellenic League Premier Division, the visitors to the Corinium Stadium tomorrow are eighth in Division One East.
Yet despite the gap between the two sides, Roberts knows that he can’t take them lightly.
“If I’m honest I don’t know too much about them,” he said. “But they beat Newbury in the last round 3-1 so they must have something about them.
“They will be looking for a bit of a giant-killing against us, but we have near enough a full strength squad so we should be OK.”
Roberts is still without striker Jason Milhench as he serves the final match of his three-game ban following his sending off while playing for Supermarine Sport.
Town are also missing midfielder Callum Parsons as he is cup-tied for this clash, but the Bassett chief says that he is unlikely to bring in any new faces.
“Johnny Aitkenhead is getting back to full fitness after a spell out, so that will be like having a new player,” Roberts said.
“At the moment we have a squad of 18 to 20 players that we will see us through the rest of the season.
“There are three or four areas that we feel will need improving on next season to make sure we are strong enough to compete.”
Meanwhile, Purton will be looking to bounce back from last Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Clanfield when they make the trip to struggling Old Woodstcok Town.
Chris Pethick’s side sit comfortably in mid-table in Division One West, while Oxfordshire hosts lie second-from-bottom in the league and have only two wins to their name.
