TROWBRIDGE boxer Dan Carr was delighted to be honoured by the Southern Area boxing fraternity with a prestigious award from a five-star London hotel last weekend – if only he had managed to be there to receive it.

The 26-year-old was nominated for the Best Supporting Boxer gong at the 2014 British Boxing Board of Control Southern Area Awards and at London’s Grange City Hotel last Saturday.

Light-welterweight Carr was awarded it for his commitment to the sport.

But as the Contender Gym fighter’s car broke down on the way, Carr was forced to miss out on his big evening in the capital and is instead set to finally get his hands on his award tonight.

“To start with, the cigarette lighter in my car wasn’t working, meaning that we couldn’t get the sat nav on to help us get there – then, my car overheated so my partner and me decided that we’d have to miss the awards,” said Carr, the veteran of 58 professional fights.

“It was pretty annoying because I’ve only had the car a few months. I was supposed to fight the night before but I pulled out of that because I didn’t want to have a black eye or anything for the ceremony.

“I’m fighting on a bill in Birmingham (tonight) and my manager (PJ Rowson) is going to hand me the award there.

“It’s nice to get it. I think I got it because I’m pretty polite and I never kick up a fuss.

“Some boxers turn up in the same shorts as the other guy and refuse to change but I bring four or five different pairs.

“Some people moan if they don’t get paid straight away but I just give people my bank details and say ‘do it when you can’.

“A lot of journeymen go into the ring and don’t do anything but people are starting to recognise who I am because I go toe-to-toe with other fighters and it’s them who end up with the bruises and black eyes.

“At the end of the day, those fighters still usually win but people get to see that, as well as a good fight, so they go home happy.”

Carr will be fighting on the April 5 bill at the Forum, Bath, against Barnsley’s Lee Gibbons (1-2).
