THIS WEEKEND the eight Westlecot players who competed in the Bristol Open last Sunday plus Steve Remington, John Anderson and his son Kyle will be competing in the inaugural planetbowls North Wilts Open Singles.

In the first round starting today at 5pm Remington and Gary Jackson have been drawn against each other, Mike Titcombe Jr plays Alex Jacobs (North Wilts), Lucy Smith meets Sean Gingell (Egham, Surrey) while Kyle Anderson, a late reserve replacement faces local player Janet Hardie.

Katy Smith will meet Nick Revell (Five Rivers) again who she beat in Bristol, while Denis Holborow plays Exeter’s John Relph (Isca) and Ian Jefferies faces the host’s Maurice Byron.

Undoubtedly the pick of first round matches on Saturday evening is the clash between Neil Smith and Andy Moore (Christie Miller, Melksham), one of the best players in the county for many years.

Moore was runner-up in the first Westlecot Open in 2011.

Westlecot’s John Anderson, who came in as a reserve replacement earlier in the week, plays his first round match at 8.30am on Sunday morning against Bournemouth’s Ben Paulley. James Nobbs, also a reserve replacement, faces Shaun Jones (Malvern Hills), winner of this season’s Barwell Open in early December at 11.30am.

All the 11 Westlecot players will be after the top prize of £1,000.

Play runs from 5.30pm until 9.30pm today and restarts tomorrow at 8.30am with the final at 8.30pm.
