HUSBAND and wife duo Dave and Mary Myler retained their Winter League crown at Ogbourne Downs last weekend in dramatic style as they claimed victory on the 18th hole.

Facing father and son pairing Mark and Jake Bolton, the reigning champions were forced to fight all the way for victory.

Just a single hole had separated the sides throughout the match before Dave sunk a nervy five-foot putt on the final hole to clinch victory.

The Mylers’ success saw them triumph over 96 other players and was the third time the pair had won the competition which dates back to the late 1970’s.

A stableford competition for all other Winter League competitors also took place with Kevan Williams and Andy Hatter taking the honours with a score of 38 points.

Earlier in the month Neil Parsons took victory in the men’s stableford with his huge haul of 42 points. His effort pipped Brian Davis on 38 points and Colin Batten on 37.

Ogbourne’s new captains have also been welcomed in with the traditional captains’ drive-in.

Representing the club in 2014 is Geoff Sparrow (club captain), Shirley Soloman (ladies captain), Tony Hales (seniors captain) and Alex Tellwright (juniors captain).

The day itself saw various competitions taking place with Douglas Millington, Dave Fletcher, Sue Haydon and Anee Ferguson winning the team event with 109 points. One point back in second was the foursome of Tom Heppell, Rich Thomas, Keith Lodge, Stuart Walker. In third place was Hazel Shewry, Stuart Shewry, Richard Sealey and Dave Watson with 106 points.

Derrick Jefferies and Dominic Hammond won the nearest the pin competitions while Peter Hayman and Miriam Tapper won the putt out events.
