SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb believes that last month’s shock defeat to rock bottom Fleet Town has helped refocus his side’s minds as they continue their play-off charge in Division One South and West.

The Webbs Wood Stadium outfit were left stunned by the league’s cellar-dwellers as they ran out 3-0 victors at their Hampshire home on March 22.

And while Supermarine lost 3-0 to fellow play-off hopefuls Tiverton Town 10 days ago, they have bounced back with three impressive victories.

Webb and his charges will be looking to make that four tomorrow when they make the trip to Berkshire to tackle Thatcham Town.

“I know that defeat to Fleet left us playing a bit of catch, but I do think that it has actually helped us,” Webb said. “We have refocused the mind, we are concentrating on what we need to do and not look too far ahead.”

The Marine chief has been delighted with his side’s last two outings as they beat North Leigh 2-0 and then followed that up with a 5-0 thrashing of Guildford City on Wednesday night.

And while he has never doubted his team’s firepower, Josh Parsons has scored five the last seven goals, Webb is pleased that they have kept two clean sheets.

“Sam (Warrell) has been absolutely fantastic since he has been here and he is a pleasure to work with,” Webb said.

“He organises our defence, he determines whether we play a back three or four, he sets incredibly high standards.

“We did have an issue with conceding too many goals, but Sam is a fantastic goalkeeper and it is pleasing that we are keeping clean sheets.”

Despite the 5-0 success over Guildford, Webb wants his side to be more ruthless in front of goal.

“If I’m being hyper critical of Wednesday then we should have won by a bigger margin,” he said. “Josh is fantastic form, and while Ash Edenborough hasn’t scored since the Cirencester game he is getting the opportunities in front of goal.

“But we need to kill sides off, we need to up our goals to shots ratio, because if the games start getting tight we need to be able to nick a goal.”

Although Thatcham sit in the bottom half of the table, Webb has drilled into his players that they cannot afford any more slip ups in the final five matches of the season.

The South Marston side are in fourth place, five points above Paulton Rovers who occupy the final play-off berth, and Webb is keen for his side to extend their campaign for the second season running.

“You’d have to say that Tiverton, Cirencester and Merthyr Town are going to make it,” the Supermarine manager said. “Then there is a chasing pack, which we are part of, and we have to concentrate and not slip up in our final five games to make the play-offs.”
