SWIMMING: Glasgow warm-up for Jazz

FREESTYLE ace Jazz Carlin plans to use this week’s British Gas Swimming Championships as a dress rehearsal for the summer’s Commonwealth Games.
The 23-year-old former Royal Wootton Bassett School pupil is in the Wales squad for July’s Games in Glasgow and will be putting herself through her paces as she competes in the 200m, 400m and 800m events at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
Carlin’s British Championships campaign gets underway today and the Wiltshire star, who trains in Swansea, says that she has been put through the wringer by long-time coach Bud McAllister, who is due to relocate to Australia next week.
“It’s the first time I’ve been pre-selected for major competition so the pressure is off but I still want to try and do well,” said Carlin.
“The schedule in Glasgow is going to be exactly the same as at the Commonwealth Games and it’ll be great to test out how long you have to rest and a few little things like nutrition.
“My coach hasn’t let me rest or taper and we’ve worked right through the last few months – I’m a bit sore but it’s worked out well so far because I had good results at the Flanders Cup and in Marseilles (in the Mediterranean Open).
“I’m going to be going out to Perth for six weeks when my coach heads out there next week and it’s all been geared towards me being as fast as I can for next July.”
Paralympic Games star Stephanie Millward and Corsham ASC’s Craig Harris are also in action.
