SWINDON Supermarine manager Dave Webb believes his side should have done better against struggling Guildford City as they moved back into the play-off places in Southern League Division One South & West.

The Webbs Wood Stadium side secured a point at Guildford and because Shortwood United lost 2-1 at title-chasing Cirencester Town they are now in the driving seat to extend the campaign past Saturday.

“We don’t like doing things the easy way do we?” Webb said. “After such a magnificent performance on Saturday (Marine beat then leaders Merthyr Town 1-0) we drop points at a side who have conceded 140 goals this season.

“With the greatest of respects to Guildford, it is not the nicest of places to go, but we should have won - I’m just thankful that Cirencester beat Shortwood because the point has moved us up a place.”

Chris Taylor fired the visitors into an early lead with a stunning strike and although Supermarine piled on the pressure they could not convert their chances.

Guildford levelled matters when Andy White pounced on an error by Jon Steedman with four minutes remaining.

“When you are only 1-0 up and not putting away your chances you have keep the other side in the match,” Webb said.

“We can’t do that against Bishops Cleeve (on Saturday) and if we do make the play-offs we can’t do it then either.”

Supermarine, however, thought that they had snatched a last-minute winner when Josh Parsons forced the ball over the line.

“The referee had given a goal,” Webb explained. “But their bench were up in arms, their players had surrounded the assistant referee - it was all pretty unsavoury - and he gave a handball.

“He wasn’t even the one who gave the goal, so how he can then change the referee’s mind I don’t know.”

Supermarine were left counting the cost of the point at Guildford as both Eddie Stevens and Saturday’s match winner Josh Morse limped off.

Stevens suffered bruising to his foot, while Morse, according to Webb had studs down the back of his leg.

The South Marston outfit also travelled without hitman Ash Edenborough due to a hamstring problem, while skipper Dave Bampton has had a recurrence of a back injury.

“Even though we changed the team around, we should have had enough to beat Guildford,” Webb said.
