DEVIZES 2nd secured their survival in Dorset & Wilts One North as they saw off relegated Calne at London Road.
The home side’s triumph lifted them third from bottom in the table and ensured Pewsey Vale were relegated despite a spirited revival in the second half of the season.
It began well for the hosts as Matty Holloran’s chip over the top allowed 17 year old Ali Broughton to go over, Holloran missing the conversion but then adding a penalty for an 8-0 lead.
Devizes kept pushing and the second try arrived as Calum Conway took a quick tap penalty and bundled over between the posts for Holloran to add the extras.
Back came Calne, who dominated the scrum and rolling mauls, the ball being sent wide for winger – and Devizes Colts player – Luke Cador to touch down for the visitors, Matt Kelly converting.
The best score of the match was sealed just before the break as a rumble from the home forwards ended with Craig Hurcombe cutting through, Holloran converting to make it 22-7.
Conway and Holloran combined to send in Hugo O’Neill over the line for the bonus point try which Holloran again converted.
Calne fought back and caught Devizes unawares as prop Shane McCafferty crashed over from close range.
But Devizes wrapped up victory as wing Eddy Darragh sprinted over, before the game was brough to a premature end when Calne fly-half Liam Kearney suffered a broken upper left humerus, which required an ambulance and hospital treatment.
