WESSEX Squash Club are aiming for their first Wiltshire overall title in more than 10 years when they take on Marlborough A in the county play-off match at their Dowling Street courts on Thursday.
The play-off is contested by the two teams that won the top division in the different halves of the 2013/14 season. Wessex dramatically picked up the spring title, overtaking Cricklade in their final match. Marlborough were the side to pip Cricklade in the winter, ending four points ahead of the side destined to be the bridesmaid of 2013/14.
Marlborough have the better head-to-head record, having three won of their four meetings. However, Wessex picked up a whitewash vctory in the sides’ last encounter in March.
Wessex captain Dean Watkins is aware how big an achievement even qualifying for the final is for Wessex and is anticipating a tough match-up.
“It’s massive, it’s only our second season in Division One and we’ve managed to get through to the finals for the first time in 15 years,” he said.
“It’s been a long hard season, the players have played lots of matches building up to the final and been putting in extra training with Adam Giles and getting fully prepared.
“They’re really up for it. It’s really exciting for the club and I’m expecting a good crowd on the night.
“It’s the top event over the whole season for us it’s like being against Man United and winning the Premier League, well maybe not this season.”
The match could come down to the battle between the two highly regarded number ones for each team. Marlborough will be hoping former Wiltshire champion and over 35s champion Julian Bennett will overcome the current holder of both of those titles, Wessex’s Giles.
Wessex will be opening their doors to spectators with the match due to start at 7.20pm.
