JUDO: Reed earns Commonwealth Games place

This Is Wiltshire: Tom Reed Tom Reed

DEVIZES judoka Tom Reed has been included in England's team for this summer's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Team Bath-based Reed, who missed out on selection for the Great Britain team for the London 2012 Olympic Games, will represent his country in the U81 kgs category as part of a 14-strong England line-up.

The 27 year old - a former European and World Cup medalist, earned the biggest win of his career last June as he claimed his first-ever IJF World Tour victory at the Miami Grand Prix and represented Great Britain at the Glasgow European Open late last year.

He also narrowly missed a medal at the London British Open European Cup last weekend, finishing fifth.

Olympic judo silver medalist Gemma Gibbons has also been named in the England squad.

Gibbon's emotional semi-final victory at ExCeL, when she paid tribute to her late mother, was one of the most memorable moments of London 2012.

However, the 27-year-old has since been hampered by shoulder and ankle injuries which have limited her time on the Tatami, keeping her out of contention for the recent European Championships.

The Edinburgh-based judoka, now married to Scotland's Euan Burton, will be joined in Team England by fellow London Olympians Ashley McKenzie and Colin Oates, who last weekend won the under-66kg gold medal at the International Judo Federation Baku Grand Slam in Azerbaijan.

Elsewhere, Faith Pitman, from West Essex club, will contest the under-63kgs and 2016 Olympic hopeful Nekoda Smythe-Davis, who is now based full-time at the British Judo Centre of Excellence in Walsall, will fight in the under-57kgs.

Team England Judo squad for 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow: Men - Ashley McKenzie (U60kg), Colin Oates (U66kg), Jan Gosiewki (U73kg), Owen Livsey (U81kg), Thomas Reed (U81kg), Gary Hall (U90kgs), Benjamin Fletcher (U100kgs); Women - Kelly Edwards (U52kgs), Nekoda Smythe-Davis (U57kgs), Faith Pitman (U63kgs), Megan Fletcher (U70kgs), Caroline Kinnane (U78kgs), Gemma Gibbons (U78kgs), Jodie Myers (+78kgs).
