WOOTTON Bassett will be aiming to keep up with Wiltshire League leaders Urchfont when they host Box at Rylands Way this weekend.

Bassett saw their trip to Beanacre & Melksham called off at the last minute a week ago, due to the poor weather, and will be hoping to add a second victory of the season to their tally when winless Box arrive tomorrow.

Capain Darren Beasant told the Advertiser: “We don’t know much about them, other than they’ve got a couple of very seasoned, very capable cricketers who play for them.

“I’m sure they’ll be well disciplined and well led. They won the league last year and anyone who’s won a lot of games will have a lot of confidence.

“They had an interesting first-week encounter with Urchfont, where 100 played 60, and we’re expecting them to be very decent.

“I’m sure we’ll be tested most weeks and this week particularly.”

Lee Stevens returns to the Bassett side this weekend and Beasant is looking forward to playing cricket in decent weather after a handful of wet weekends.

“The weather’s set fair and we’re expecting a good deck at Bassett,” he said.

“I imagine it will be a high-scoring encounter. It’s been a bit stop start - played a week, off a week, played a week, off a week - so I think everybody feels a little bit underdone. We certainly do.

“We played Swindon a month a go and (the weather) was brutal, we played NALGO a couple of weeks ago and it wasn’t pleasant and it was one of those frustrating ones last week.

“They asked us to travel down, we sat around for three hours and traveled back at five o’clock.”

Having edged past NALGO in the one competitive fixture they have got in this term, Beasant knows where his team must improve.

“We’ve got to be more disciplined with the ball,” he said. “In the middle overs it’s going to be pretty important to us all summer.”

Meanwhile, Goatacre will be hoping to build on victory over Ilminster last time out when they travel to Thornbury in WEPL Premier Two.
