HILPERTON teenager Caitlin Wosika isn’t sure if she’ll ever take off her Great Britain kit once she gets her hands on it.

The 14-year-old, who runs for Team Bath and swims for Bradford on Avon Swimming Club, has earned her first-ever international call-up after being selected in the Great Britain team for July’s European Biathle Championships.

Biathle is an offshoot of modern pentathlon and Wosika will complete two 1000m runs, sandwiching a 200m swim, in a continuous race for the U17 event in Setubal, Portugal, on July 19-20.

Wosika earned her Great Britain berth by finishing second in her age group at a selection race at Millfield School, in Somerset, on May 4 and the John of Gaunt School pupil is not unnerved by the prospect of making her international debut against a host of older girls.

“I’ve always seen lots of people wearing Great Britain kits and thought ‘I want one’.

“I’ve tried a few different sports but this is the one where I’ve managed to do it,” said Wosika, who will have mum Jane cheering her on in Portugal. She said: “I haven’t been given my kit yet but when I do, I think I might sleep in it.

“I’ve always done a lot of cross country but my swimming has got stronger so that’s why this is a good event for me.

“I’m racing as an U17 and it’s going to be my first race in that age group – it’s going to be hard but I’m trying not to think about the other girls and just concentrate on my own race.

“It’s the first time I’ve ever competed in another country too. I’ve got no idea what that’s going to be like and I don’t really know what the competition’s going to be like but I’m excited about it.

“I’m just concentrating on doing my best over there and seeing how far that gets me.”

Wosika finished eighth at the National Schools’ Biathlon Final in London in April and was also sixth at last December’s National Biathlon Championships in Solihull, both in the U15 age group.

Two years ago, the Hilperton youngster was selected to carry the Olympic torch through the South Gloucestershire village of Bitton as part of the build-up to the London 2012 Games.
