DAVID Howell will get back out onto the course this weekend in a bid to try to figure out way his form has dipped so dramatically.

The Broome Manor pro had a disastrous second round at the BMW PGA Championship yesterday, as he shot a five-over-par 77.

That left the 38-year-old on four-over for the tournament and missing the cut for a third successive year at Wentworth.

“I’m not going to get better sitting on the sofa, so I’ll be back out this weekend with my thinking cap on looking at how I can get through this,” Howell, who won the tournament in 2006, told the Advertiser.

“This is the third year in a row that I’ve missed out and I’m very disappointed.”

Having finished his opening round with an eagle three at the 18th on Thursday, Howell, who had missed the cut in his last two outings on the European Tour, went into yesterday’s round with high hopes.

But with strong winds and rain, the Swindon star began with a bogey five and he never recovered.

Further bogeys at three, five, eight, nine, 10 and 13, as well as a double bogey six at the 16th, meant that birdies at seven, 12 and 18 counted for little.

“I started poorly, I was hitting it poorly on the range and it just got worse,” he said. “No doubt the conditions didn’t help - but it wasn’t bad enough to shoot five-over.

“I felt that I played pretty well on the Thursday without feeling entirely comfortable, so to go out and do this is very disappointing.”

Howell wasn’t the only player to struggle on the second day at Wentworth as South African star Ernie Els fired a six-over 78 after going around in par on the opening day.
