COUNTY skipper Mike Coles is hoping that his rejuvenated Wiltshire side can take their fine form from the Unicorns Knockout Trophy into their Unicorns Championship campaign.

Wiltshire failed to win a competitive game in all competitions last summer but have turned their fortunes around this season, winning every game in their group in the one-day knockout competition.

And on Sunday, the county side travel to Banbury as they get they kick off this summer’s three-day campaign against Oxfordshire.

“The one-day competition has gone really well so far and everyone is looking to the quarter-final (against Norfolk, on June 15) with some excitement but the three-day game really is the one that’s the most important,” said captain Coles.

“We’ve not done well in the three-day game for many, many years but we go into it with a bit of momentum – winning can become a habit, just like losing can.

“We were right up there for batting and bowling points from the first innings last season but we let ourselves down, especially with the bat, in the second innings.

“We know that we’ve got the players to do well, so it’s just about applying ourselves because it’s the same game, just played over a longer period. I haven’t played against Oxfordshire for a few years but Banbury is a nice ground from recollection and we’re looking forward to going there.”
