ARIANA Watling, of St Mary’s School, Calne, had a great day at Saturday’s Wiltshire Schools Track & Field Championships, winning both the 200m and 800m with times of 28.0secs and 2:29.1 respectively, writes Kevin Fahey.

Older sister Yasmin won the 3000m in 11:00.08 at Salisbury, while Sheldon School’s Gemma Shepherd retained her inter girls’ 1500m in 4mins 37secs, two seconds slower than she ran in 2013.

In the junior girls’ 1500m, Caitlin Wosika, from John of Gaunt School, won in a time of 4:51 with Corsham School’s Jade Littlechild second in 5:03.

Melksham Oak Community School’s Will Stockley did the double in the inter boys’ 1500m (4:17.5) and 1500 steeplechase (4:51.9), in which he was the sole competitor.

Sprinter Owen Harnett, of Lavington School, was runner-up in the inter boys’ 100m (11.4secs) and the 200m (22.7secs), the latter inside the English Schools’ qualifying standard.

Emily Dixon, from St Augustine’s College in Trowbridge, signed off at the championships by winning the senior girls’ 100m hurdles in a new championship record time of 14.6secs, bettering her own record of 15.1secs that she set last year and added the high jump title with 1.61m.

Dixon has been offered a scholarship studying fine art at Elon University in North Carolina, giving her an excellent chance to fulfil her athletics potential as well as pursuing her academic career.

Her final appearance for Wiltshire will be at the English Schools’ Track & Field Championships next month.

Eleven-year-old Rory Howorth set a new county record in the minor boys’ 800m with victory in 2:12.3secs, breaking the record previously held by his brother Robert by a massive six seconds.

Howorth also won the high jump with a personal best leap of 1.48m, which added three centimetres to the mark he achieved when winning the Wiltshire Clubs’ title last month. That was also a new county record.

Older twin brothers John and Robert also impressed, coming agonisingly close to English Schools’ qualifying standards in their events.

John won the junior boys’ 1500m convincingly with a time of 4:23, a personal best of three seconds, which is just one second outside the qualifying mark.

Robert finished runner-up to Swindon’s Harry Kearns in a close 800m race, again recording a best of 2:06.5, half a second outside the English Schools’ standard.
