WOOTTON Bassett captain Darren Beasant believes there will be many more twists and turns in the race for promotion from the Wiltshire County League.

Bassett returned to the top of Division One on Saturday after their 10 wicket success over bottom-of-the-table Collingbourne delivered them 25 vital points.

That total was enough to dispose of then table-toppers Malmesbury, who claimed 17 points from their 17-run success over Bradford-on-Avon, and open up a four-point lead at the summit.

Bassett’s platform success over Collingbourne was set-up by a miserable spell of seam bowling from AK Sharma as he picked up 1-8 from nine overs.

Then Ian Lancaster took 5-24 from 12 as the visitors were skittled for just 106 in 40 overs.

Knowing that his side needed to reach their target without losing too many wickets, Jack Dymoke (54*) was promoted up the order and along with Sam Lawro (48*) who got the runs in just 17 overs.

“You don’t get any extra points for blasting them off in just nine overs,” Beasant said. “The aim was not to lose many wickets and that is why Jack went into open.

“We said at the start of the day we needed to get as many points as possible and we began really well - it was as good as we had bowled all season.

“Ian has been a revelation since becoming a left-arm spinner last year and at times on Saturday we had five men around the bat.

“Now we just have to keep on picking as many points up as we can because there are going to be some strange results.

“We reach the halfway stage this weekend and if we are still in the top two then maybe we can start to think about getting promotion.”
