JOHNNY Haines enjoyed a fruitful weekend as he reached the third round of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy.

After beating Denis Ovens in round one on Friday, the High Street Club player dumped World Championship finalist Peter Wright out of the tournament with a 6-4 victory on Saturday afternoon.

Wright hit back to level after Haines had marched into a 3-0 lead, but the Scot punished for missed doubles as he fell to defeat.

Round three saw Haines come up against Steve Beaton and that’s where his tournament came to an end as he missed match darts before crashing out.

Beaton led 4-1 before the Swindon ace hit back with finishes of 91 and 101 in a run of four straight legs to move 5-4 up.

Haines missed one match dart, at double 15, in the 10th leg as Beaton forced a decider, and though the qualifier hit a 180 he was made to pay for more misses across two visits as Beaton landed double eight to edge into the last eight.
