WRAG Barn star Martin Sell claimed he is playing the best golf of his career after wrapping up another win on the Jamega Tour yesterday.

Sell’s second round 63 broke the course record at Essendon Golf & Country Club and in turn forced a play-off with order of merit rival David Dixon.

A birdie at the first play-off hole - the par four first - gave Sell victory as he sunk a 15-footer for the win.

“It’s probably the best golf I have played in my career, certainly the most consistent I’ve ever played,” Sell told the Advertiser after his win.

“It was quite important that I beat Dave (Dixon) because I think he might have gone ahead of me in the order of merit if he’d won.”

Sell trailed overnight leader Ben Martin by four shots after a first round score of 68.

A birdie at the first got Sell’s second round off to a flier and although he immediately dropped that shot at the second, another birdie at the third got him back on track.

Four more birdies rocketed Sell into contention at 10 under par before a three putt at 11 saw him walk away with a bogey.

Sell recovered with a birdie at 12 and then drained a 15-foot eagle putt at 13 before parring 14, 15 and 16.

Birdies at 17 and 18 gave Sell the clubhouse lead with Dixon needing a par, which he achieved, at the last to force a play-off.

In the shootout both players found the green in two with Dixon just inside Sell’s effort which left him with a 15-foot putt.

And in typical matchplay fashion, when Sell sunk his putt Dixon missed his to give the Wrag Barn pro victory.

“I played quite nicely for a couple of days,” added Sell. “I didn’t really make the most of the par fives on the first day so I knew there was a low score out there.

“I knew what I had to do and it is nice to do it.

“I was going along quite nicely. I knew there was a few guys on 10 under at the turn so I knew what I had to do.

“I dropped a shot at 11. I had a 15 footer for birdie and I really fancied it but I raced it past and then missed the one back up. That was a silly mistake but then I eagled 13 to get back on track.

“I’m very happy with how I am playing right now.”

Sell’s victory extended his lead over Dixon on the Jamega Tour’s order of merit although his rival will have a chance to bounce back with the Wrag Barn star missing the next tournament at The Shire on Monday.

“Unfortunately I can’t play the next tournament,” said Sell. “I’ll be keeping a close eye on what David does.

“I’m delighted to be playing so consistently well and I’m just going to keep working hard to keep it up.”
