NEIL SHARDLOW: Hosts were felled by batting comeback
I HAVE to say I was really proud of our win against Berkshire this week.
We’ve been playing some excellent cricket all season but we were actually in a bit of trouble at the end of the first day. But we fought back and really knocked the stuffing out of them, we saw Berkshire collapse right in front of us.
We were struggling 115-8 but the tail wagged for us – Tahir Afridi hit a great 70 and Jake Roberts also chipped in to take us past their total.
You could see that it was a real body blow for them and they fell apart. On the second day, they wanted to bat all the way through but we had them at 80-odd for five before Ed Young took two wickets in an over.
The last ball of the day saw Joe King, who bowled superbly, clean up their danger man Richard Morris and that was another massive blow for them going in to the overnight break.
The players were on cloud nine after that and we managed to get things wrapped up quite comfortably before lunchtime on Tuesday.
Berkshire are a good side and it’s another place that we haven’t had too much luck in the past, so that’s another reason to be really proud of the result and the performance.
That’s our tenth win in a row. The only person who would know if we’ve ever gone on a better winning streak than that is Brian White (honorary treasurer), who’s been involved with the county for longer than I have, and he can’t remember anything better than this.
We’re delighted and we’re really looking forward to two big games in the next few weeks – the Trophy semi-final against Oxfordshire and the Championship match against Devon.
We’ve had to make a few changes for the switch of format, which means that we’ve brought Tom Morton back in to open the batting.
Unfortunately, Joe King misses out as Tom Foley comes back in. Joe understands the decision because he’s an attacking bowler and we need someone who’s more defensive for the one-day game, which Tom is.
Hopefully we can keep this winning run going and have a Trophy final that we can look forward to.
