A RECORD 105 players took part in the Marlborough Golf Club Seniors Open earlier this month.

A large Marlborough contingent were joined by close to 70 players from other clubs, with Adam Williams (Wells) winning Division One and Alan Wignall of Clevedon Golf Club picking up the Division Two title. Per-Axel Warensjo won the home competition.

The day also proved to be a special occasion for the very last player out on the course - Mike Johnson from Weymouth, who owns the Marlborough Restaurant in Weymouth.

To mark the 40th anniversary of the restaurant he decided with two friends to take part in the namesake Marlborough Seniors Open. “We’ve had a great time,” he said. “We’ll be back next year.”

Steve Faulkner, general manager of event sponsor Dick Lovett BMW, said: “We are delighted to be associated with Marlborough Golf Club. It is such a friendly club. Everyone was made to feel very welcome and clearly enjoyed the day.”

Seniors captain David Ferris said: “It was a fantastic day. The course was in excellent condition. We looked forward to our sponsorship with Dick Lovett BMW for the next two years.”
