JAZZ Carlin once again smashed the Commonwealth Games women's 800m freestyle record as she won gold at Glasgow 2014 this evening.

The 23-year-old Wales star, who is a former Wootton Bassett School pupil, set a new Games record of 8:22.69 in yesterday's heats and she wowed crowds at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre tonight by winning in 8:18.11.

Carlin, who won two medals at the 2010 Commonwealths in Dehli, becomes the first Welsh woman to win a gold swimming medal in 40 years.

"I knew it was going to be a tough race tonight. It really was a strong field and I put everything into my training and I really wanted to perform well," Carlin told the BBC.

"I'm just to happy to come away with a gold. It's a bit slower than I wanted to go but obviously it's all about the race tonight.

"Last year, at World Championships, I got pipped on the last 50 so this year, I really made an effort to make sure that that last 50-100 was quicker than anyone in the pool.

"I've really been working on it and obviously, it paid off tonight.

"I can't believe it, I really can't. Seeing the Welsh flag; I'm getting emotional now."
