ANNA Mayes has labelled England’s netball team as the best group of players she has ever worked with as they gear up for the Commonwealth Games semi-finals.

Head coach Mayes used all 12 of her squad as England claimed their second successive win with a comfortable 70-24 victory over Trinidad and Tobago.

Mayes watched on as England conceded 12 points in each half and racked up 43 themselves in the second in which the starting team was shifted around.

Up next today (Wednesday) for Mayes and England in Glasgow are winless Barbados and then the semi-finals where they will face Jamaica or New Zealand.

And, with Barbados not expected to challenge England, much like Trinidad and Tobago, Mayes didn’t hold back in her assessment of the group.

“It’s probably the best group of players I have ever worked with as a team. As a group they are the best and it is great to be working with them,” she said.

“It was a good win and we’re building momentum. We were disappointed after the Australia game but the girls are enjoying it and it is important that they do.”

England enjoyed a day off in between the victories over South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago having played three matches in three days in Glasgow.

That included an opening win over Wales and a one-point defeat to Australia but Mayes insists there’ll be little more time off at the Commonwealth Games.

“The girls played three games on the bounce, so it was good that they had a day off and then there are two days without a match if we make the semis,” she said.

“They won’t be days off though. We will do some on court sessions. We always review our opposition and look at them and that will be the same.”
