HIGHWORTH Town manager John Fisher believes his has got the strongest squad he has had during his reign at the club.

The Hellenic League Premier Division side have added six new faces to their squad this summer - many coming from Wootton Bassett Town including Callum Parsons, Shaun Carter and Jonny Aitkenhead.

And Fisher believes that the squad he has now got at the Elms are in good shape ahead of next Saturday’s league opener at Reading Town.

“When I started here three seasons ago I had to do a lot of re-building,” the Worthians chief said. “Then last year we managed to consolidate a little bit.

“And this summer we have got an even stronger squad - we are looking good and I’m happy with what I have managed to bring in.”

Highworth play their final pre-season friendly of the summer tomorrow when they welcome Southern League Division One South and West outfit Swindon Supermarine.

Marine, managed by former Highworth boss Dave Webb, were in friendly action last night when they took on New College Swindon.

And Fisher is pleased that they will end their pre-season programme against the South Marston men.

“We played each other last year and it was a good test for both teams,” Fisher said. “It was a 2-2 draw and even though we are in a lower league than them it was a good workout.

“It gives us the right kind of test before we go to Reading, because of the first five games we play this season I think three of them will be pushing for honours.”

Wootton Bassett will be looking to bounce back from their 3-2 defeat to Devizes Town when they travel to Marlborough Town tomorrow.

Nathan Hawkins and Sam English were on target for Paul Braithwaite’s side against the Western League First Division side.

Shrivenham have progressed in the Jim Newton Cup with a 5-0 success over Abingdon United with Steve Robertson bagging a hat-trick for Sam Collier’s men.

The Barrington Park side head to Melksham tomorrow, but they will also have to the semi-final of the cup at Clanfield on Sunday afternoon.
