SWINDON drew 4-4 with a touring team from Watford in a recent meeting.
The home side made an excellent start in the morning session, leading 3-1 thanks to victories from Rosemary Wall and Diana Trott in the doubles against John Smallbone and Wendy Spencer-Smith (25-8), John Small against Alan Clark (25-21) in the singles and Neil Morrison over Geoff Johnson (26-16). Robin Barry was Watford’s only success story before lunch, beating Bill Marner 26-15.
The results in the afternoon were reversed, however. In the doubles, Mary and Roger Bedells lost to Geoff Johnson and Alan Clark 22-17, while in the singles John Small lost to Barry 26-14 and Bill Marner lost to Wendy Spencer-Smith 23-10. Neil Morrison beat John Smallbone 24-13 leaving the match all square.
Meanwhile, on July 27, Swindon’s Federation Team returned to Kington Langley to complete a match that was abandoned earlier in the season.
In the morning doubles, Swindon’s pair of Neil Morrison and Mike Graham lost to John Grimshaw and Jane Hull 17-11, with Morrison not even getting his ball through hoop two. John Small of Swindon won his singles match against Tim Hulbert, 13-12.
Although it was even by lunch time, Kington Langley, with home experience of the grass slopes, made a clean sweep of the afternoon. Jane Hull beat John Small 10-8, John Grimshaw saw off Mike Graham 18-17 and Tim Hulbert overwhelmed Neil Morrison 20-8, as the hosts won 4-1.
