CHIPPENHAM Town opened their Southern League Premier Division campaign with a 2-0 win at Biggleswade Town this afternoon.

The Bluebirds produced one of their slickest displays for several seasons as a goal in each half saw them deservedly beat their Bedfrodshire opponents.

The victory was achieved at some cost as Lee Phillips received a head injury that saw him play the second half swathed in a bandage, while the impressive Conor McCormack left the field with a shoulder injury after finding himself at the bottom of a pile of players. Jon Beeden also received a back injury.

The Bluebirds produced a very bright opening period that saw Alex Ferguson's volley just clear the bar.

The opening goal came on 16 minutes when a five man move ended with McCormack crossing for Phillips to produce a classy downward header that left keeper Ian Brown rooted to the spot.

Chippenham continued to harry and frustrate their opponents and might have scored again as Brown dived to turn aside Jordan Roberts' 30-yard drive.

After the break Luke Ballinger and Phillips both went close too extending their lead before McCormack's injury.

Biggleswade then came back into the match and threatened an undeserved equaliser. However, a combination of poor finishing, good defending and two competent saves from Kent Kauppinen held them at bay.

Three minutes from time substitute Omar Simpson showed his athletic pedigree as he sprinted clear from the halfway line before rolling the ball past Brown to score his first goal in a Bluebird shirt.
