NEIL SHARDLOW: We’ll make sure we savour this
WE WERE lucky enough to get the chance to stay over an extra night in the hotel on Tuesday night so the boys could celebrate what they’d achieved.
They had a bit of a night out in Nantwich and I think the majority of them got the morning off work so they could make their way back to Wiltshire.
At the moment, we’re just letting everything sink in because it was just incredible.
Great credit has to go to Neil Clark for having the innings of his life to see us through on the final day and even though it go so nerve-wracking towards the end, his ton was absolutely superb – we thought it was only fitting that Brian White, Jon Williams and John Collins presented him with his county cap after the game.
Neil came in and paced his innings superbly and even though Ashur Morrison struggled a tiny bit to stay there with him, Adam Miles came in and hit a brilliant total to help get us over the line as well.
We had to keep a close eye on what was going on in the other games with our phones and things like that and we had some really difficult decisions to make.
We could see that Cheshire were on course to lose to Oxfordshire – it would have been all over if they’d won – but also that Devon were beating Berkshire and that Herefordshire were also likely to win.
Usually, we’d concentrate on getting the bonus points and letting the result take care of itself but we chose to pretty much forfeit our first innings and after the rain on Monday, Shropshire did the same to allow us to manufacture a game and chase a result.
Fortunately, Neil stepped in and did what he did.
We’re going to be in the Championship final and that’s looking like it’s going to take place at South Wilts on September 7, 8, 9 and 10.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to play a four-day game against the winners of the other division and it’s going to be so exciting to be a part of that occasion.
It’s been an amazing few days and we’re all chuffed to bits right now.
