WOOTTON Bassett Town skipper Steve Yeardley and James Skinner struck deep into injury time to help snatch a point for Paul Braithwaite’s men at Bracknell Town.

The Corinium Stadium-based side found themselves 2-0 in this Hellenic League Premier Division clash with a matter of minutes remaining on the clock.

And with the normal 90 minutes gone, Yeardley, who started the game at right-back before being switched to his more familiar central midfield role, netted his sixth goal in as many matches.

However, far from being satisfied with a consolation goal, Bassett went straight back on the attack to win a corner and Skinner did the rest.

But the point was not enough to prevent Bassett from slipping to 15th in the table as Holyport defeated Shrivenham 1-0 to leap-frog them.

“It was no more than what we deserved,” Braithwaite said. “We were disappointed to be 1-0 down at the break.

“No-one really thought that we deserved to be losing, but ultimately they scored and we didn’t.

“It did make the talk easy though as we just had to go out there and keep doing what we were doing.

“But unfortunately we went 2-0 down and it was a goal that Bracknell didn’t have to work for.”

After finding themselves 2-0 down Braithwaite said that he switched to a 3-5-2 formation and while they had to wait for their goals, he could see an instant benefit.

And the Bassett boss was also pleased to see Yeardley continue his rich vein of form.

“We played him at right-back on Saturday before the game he reminded me that he had scored five in five and joked whether it was a good idea to move him from midfield,” Braithwaite explained.

“Once the second goal went in, we moved him back and he scored. But you expect that from Yeards, he is the skipper and he goes that extra mile for you.”

Braithwaite has also started to see the team gel as a unit after only having one player– Yeardley – remain from Jeff Roberts’ regime.

“You can see that they are gelling now,” said Braithwaite, who took over the reins from Roberts this summer. “They all work for each other.

“They may not be well known players at this level but they all work and fight for each other and that is what you want.

“We had brought in Callum Wright from Chippenham for this game and he could see just how close a unit we are and he had fitted in straight away.”
