Swindon Spitfires travelled to Truro for the second week running, this time for a South West Women’s League Premier Division game, but they were unable to repeat the FA Cup win of seven days ago, slipping to a 2-1 defeat.

A Sammie Smith free-kick came to nothing for Spitfires in the first minute while Jenny Gray cleared a Truro corner 60 seconds later.

Then some good build up play between Smith, Karyn Coombs and Emma Skinner saw Morgan Whitaker fire wide in the seventh minute.

And from the goal kick Truro raced up the other end and took the lead against the run of play through Sasha Sparkes.

Truro’s keeper did well to gather a deflected Smith free-kick on 12 minutes, and was quick off her line to deny Katie Wadey three minutes later after some good play between Coombs and Hayley Huckin.

Spitfires had further chances through Wadey and Whitaker but Truro end the half the stronger.

Spitfires were a better side after the break and were able to put the hosts under some sustained pressure with Gray and Skinner going close in the first few minutes.

However, a great tackle by Laura Stallard saved them from going further behind in the 53rd minute after a defensive slip.

The home side won a questionable penalty in the 72nd minute, but it was fired high and wide.

Three minutes later Wadey hit the post, and then a Smith free kick was cleared by the home keeper before Spitfires got a deserved equaliser in the 83rd minute; Caton clearing a long through ball by Truro to Wadey who saw her shot hit a defender before falling kindly to Huckin to power home.

But Spitfires couldn’t hold on to the point as Danni Salt prodded home from a goal-mouth scramble in the 86th minute.
