CORSHAM Town chief Trevor Rawlings revealed that going ‘back to basics’ was the key to his side’s return to form this week.

Corsham progressed through the preliminary round of the Les Phillips Cup on Tuesday night as they cruised to a 4-1 win at Wells City, with Levi Cox netting a brace whilst Aaron Ledgister and Keiron Gleed were also on target.

That triumph followed up a 5-2 win over Oldland Abbotonians in the Toolstation League First Division last weekend, which saw Matt Jenkins hit a hat-trick whilst Cox and Ben Moore were also on the scoresheet.

“We went through a little bit of a blip where it felt like we’d gotten away from playing our football,” said Rawlings, whose team have now won three on the bounce.

“We had a lot of injuries and what we did was go right back to basics. “The new signings that have come in – Nathan Phillimore, Dan Lardner and Ollie Webb – have all done well and given us a bit of a boost. We’ve got a squad again now, which is what we had at the start of the season.

“Our final ball hadn’t been there but it is now because we’re scoring goals again and it seems like it’s worked.”

Sixth-placed Corsham make the trip to Cribbs, who are fifth, this weekend before beginning next month with a game at league leaders Wincanton Town.

They then face up to local derbies with Calne Town and Chippenham Park at the Southbank and Rawlings is anticipating a crucial period in his team’s season.

He said: “They’re all massive games, for different reasons.

“The Cribbs game is the first one that we’ve got to think about.

“You never know what you’re going to get with Cribbs because they lose to some of the poorer sides but on their day, they’re as good as any team in the division.”

Nick Holton, Gary Blackwood and Gary Banks remain on the sidelines for Saturday’s trip to Bristol whilst youngster Lewis McCarron is away on Wiltshire U18 duty.
