TWO goals in the first seven minutes gave Westbury an uphill battle as they crashed out of the Les Phillips cup.

After a last-minute goal denied Westbury all three points on Saturday in a 1-1 against Devizes, Adam Collington was looking for a response.

Elliott Saunders got on the end of Ricky Charlton’s chip to open the scoring in the second minute, before turning provider by curling in a corner which came off the crossbar to Scott Lewis who tapped in.

Nathan Hallett-Young came closest to giving United a lifeline but his header from Mark Young’s corner flew over the bar and slack defending cost Westbury again as Saunders was able to put the finishing touch to a set piece move on 27 minutes.

The final goal came midway through the half when it was all too easy for Craig White as he ran in unchallenged to finish easily.

“Before you could blink we were 2-0 down,” said Collington.

“I can’t really dress it up, we didn’t deserve anything, we were very poor from the outset and gave them a huge head start.

“To be fair to the lads in the second half we showed a little bit more and worked hard.

“It is a difficult league to be in and the players have got to perform to their maximum every game.

“I am not one to make excuses and we have just got to get on with it.

“The next three games in the league are vital, we are playing teams around us and I would hope to get at least seven points if we want to achieve our targets.”
