EARLIER this month, the wheels momentarily threatened to fall off the Town steam train as Mark Cooper’s men suffered the humiliation of a 5-0 FA Cup humbling at League Two Cheltenham Town.

Jordan Turnbull was part of the Swindon defence left shell-shocked by Nathan Thompson’s early red card that day and the on-loan Southampton youngster says that his side have continued to remind themselves of the pain of their walloping at Whaddon Road.

Town have since claimed vital victories against bitter rivals Bristol City and Peterborough United and Turnbull says that the spectre of their Cheltenham disaster has provided the perfect motivation for a defence striving to remain watertight.

“After that game, coming to training, we were all proper disappointed with the result,” said the 20-year-old.

“We worked on it a lot and we’ve got a proper regime now throughout the week where we work a lot on technical stuff and how we defend.

“We don’t want to go back to that place - that’s what we keep reminding ourselves and it’s working well for us.”

Despite clean sheets topping the priority list for the Town back-line, Turnbull reckons that the emphasis will be on his team to get on the front foot when they take on Fleetwood Town at the County Ground tomorrow.

“They’ve got some experienced players - we know that - but I think we’re more concentrated on ourselves now because we’re doing really well,” he said.

“We’ve watched some clips on Fleetwood already.

“We’ll watch some more but we’re really concentrating on ourselves and how we’re going to play and how we’re going to attack them.

“We’re at home and we’ve got some really good form at home so we’re going to go out there and hopefully get the three points.

“I think we go into every game with the same ideas.

“We want to go out there and attack but we also want to keep the back door closed.”

And Turnbull revealed that he is desperate to try and contribute to Swindon’s attacking prowess and join Raphael Branco - the only defender to find the net thus far for Town - on the goal-scoring charts.

The Saints loanee said: “It’s something I’m looking for. I think I need to score.

“I think it’s something centre-halves need in their game. Defenders need to score goals, maybe from a set-piece or open play. I’m working on it and hopefully it will come soon.

“We don’t focus as much on set-plays because we haven’t got, I don’t know, the biggest of teams or (the most) aggressive in the box.

“But we do still cross the ball a lot so there’s always that opportunity for me to get on the end of one.”
