CLARRIE Dunbar ace Andy Colebrooke claimed victory at the Westlecot Open.

Colebrooke edged an enthralling final against Bournemouth’s Ben Paulley, triumphing on a tie-break in this planetbowls.com event.

The 33-year-old took home £800 for his efforts at the two-day competition, with Paulley collecting £700 after the duo opted to split the £1,500 prize money more evenly.

“It certainly helps out with Christmas,” said Colebrooke, who picked up his second planetbowls.com crown after winning last year’s tournament at Clarrie.

“You don’t get many chances to win money like that as an amateur sportsman, so I am delighted.

“I was really consistent and felt like I put in a good performance all the way through.

“It was a great final. We were pretty evenly matched and luckily I managed to win it in a tie-break.”

Colebrooke came through three matches on the first day of action, beating Welford’s Simon Davies, Shaun Jones of Malvern and Dartford player Tony Kirby.

He then returned the following afternoon to see off Clarrie club-mate Andy Taylor in the quarter-finals and Oxford’s Sam Watts in the last four.

Runner-up Paulley played all his matches on one day but his bid to claim six wins in succession proved just too much.

Earlier on, tournament favourite Danny Denison beat world number two Rob Paxton with his last bowl of the three-end tie-break, however, he could not keep up his form and lost to Taylor in the last 16.

Two Westlecot players reached the quarter-finals, with Dave Matthews winning three matches before losing to Christie Miller’s Andy Moore, while tournament organiser Neil Smith fell to runner-up Paulley.

Organisers would like to thank sponsors Only Bugalows, Hilliers and Andy Crump’s Butchers, as well as all the spectators who attended.
