SWINDON Spitfires boss Barry Winslow reckons his side could have scored even more goals despite reaching cloud nine against Division One basement boys Core Construction.

Carl Jerome led the charge for the home side with a brilliant five-goal haul as Spitfires cruised to a landslide 9-1 victory at South Marston.

Phil Legace chipped in with a brace, while player/manager Winslow and Thomas Watson were also on target as Spitfires climbed to fourth in the table.

The match was just the second Spitfires have played since mid-November because of the recent wet weather and Winslow reckons the fact his troops have still been able to train right through the winter paid dividends come game time.

“I was really pleased with that performance, especially having had such a long time out,” said Winslow.

“It’s been tough for us in the last two months because the pitches everywhere have been so bad.

“But we are one of the only teams right throughout the league to have access to training facilities indoors and I think that made a big difference.

“You could see our fitness shining through at the end as we just kept going, whereas they seemed to get more and more tired the longer the game went on.

“It was a brilliant game and everyone played well and I actually think it could have been an even bigger win because we had so many other chances that went begging as well.”

Spitfires have seven games left to go this season, starting with a trip to third-placed Ramsbury – who had no game last weekend – on Saturday.

Winslow is confident his side are capable of turning in another strong performance there, which would go a long way in achieving his goal of a top-three finish.

“I think we should be confident and I’m pretty hopeful of going there and getting another good result – maybe even another three points,” said Winslow.

“I’d like to finish third and I think with the players we have got available right now we should be able to finish there.”

Elsewhere in the division, The Clifton climbed to the top of the table after edging out previous leaders KS Miltax in a 4-3 thriller.

North Swindon WMC romped to a convincing 6-1 success at home to Redhouse, while Chiseldon got the better of tense clash against visiting Bassett Bulldogs to edge to a narrow 3-2 win.

The best result of the day in the Premier Division was recorded by Shield & Dagger, who easily outclassed Swiss Chalet Rangers to romp to an emphatic 6-0 win, while third-placed Spectrum were pushed all the way Lower Stratton but had just enough to sneak to a 2-1 victory.
