WESTBURY United defied the odds to come from behind to down high-flying Wincanton Town for just their fifth league win of the season.

Shaun Gardiner’s side had failed to win each of their past seven league matches and started the day second from bottom in the table.

That winless run had looked set to continue as the two sides entered the dying minutes level but Sam Clift was the hero for Westbury, lashing home the decisive goal at the death.

Boss Gardiner said: “I’m over the moon. It was our best performance of the season by far.

“We’ve brought in some new players and they seem to have gelled and we’ve had people come back to fitness as well.”

Westbury had to do it the hard way, though, and the visitors took the lead after 15 minutes through a Mike Taylor penalty after keeper Callum Hotine had fouled Lee Gale.

United hauled themselves back into the match and Brett Partner set up the equaliser just before the break as his cross was headed into his own net by visiting defender Gary Chapman.

A thrilling second half followed as chances came at both ends, with United taking the lead for the first time thanks to a bullet header from Marc Scammell.

The lead was short-lived, though, as Gale was able to bundle the ball home after seeing his initial effort blocked by Hotine.

But Westbury did not buckle and sealed the win when Clift burst into the box before producing a fine finish.

“I think the win was deserved and the goal that won it was a cracker,” added Gardiner.

“No one gave us a chance but all the players were superb, particularly Gary Tugwell who I brought up from the reserves.

“The team has been a bit mix and match for us lately but things are coming together for us now.”

Westbury now face a crunch game on Saturday at Roman Glass St George, who are one place below them.
