DAVE Webb has warned the Swindon Supermarine squad that they are playing for their futures at the club after conceding defeat in their play-off chase.

Marine have routinely chased a top-six finish in previous seasons but a sustained spell of injuries has blighted their 2014-15 campaign and they are well off the pace in 15th.

With 15 league games to go Webb admits hauling themselves into the fight for promotion is beyond his side and the Marine boss instead just wants his players to show their character and prove they are worth keeping hold of next season.

“It’s been a difficult season so far. For most of the players it’s a position they are not used to,” said Webb. “It’s a new experience for them and for me as well.

“Normally at this stage of the season we are talking about the play-offs but the last couple of results have scuppered any hope we had of even making a late charge.

“We have to be realistic as we are only 15th. We can get a maximum of 78 points but I don’t think any team is going to win 15 games in a row.

“The mood in the camp is good and we had a good training session on Tuesday and the players put a lot of effort in. We need to take that forward now. We are where we are and the players have got a decision to make.

“Are they just going to see the season through or are they going to realise that they’re playing for Supermarine and do they want to stay at this club for the remainder of the season and beyond?

“I don’t care if you are an experienced player or a young player, you don’t have a divine right to play for Supermarine.

“We have a minimum of 15 games left and the players need to show what they are about.”

That challenge starts at North Leigh tomorrow, with Marine looking to bounce back following last-gasp defeats in their last two games.

Webb’s side will be up against it, however, as North Leigh are flying high in fifth and have won seven and drawn two of the nine games they have played since losing to Marine at the start of December.

Webb said: “We played extremely well that day and certainly out worked them. But they have done exceptionally well since then and will believe they can reach the play-offs. Every season they seem to be there or thereabouts.

“It will be a tough game on the back of the last couple of results but I want to go there with a group of players that will work hard to try to get a result.”

Kyle Lapham, Eddie Stevens, Aaron Oakley, Dave Bampton and Bradley Gray will all miss out for Marine through injury but Webb hopes to have at least one of Chris Taylor, Luke Hopper, Aaron Ferris and Dan Martin available again.
