BATH & Wiltshire Romans were beaten by the University of Bath whey they took to the field for their first ever game.

The Romans were only formed in January after the committee at Leafy Lane in Corsham decided their sports fields were underutilised during the summer.

They started brightly against the students, with loose forward and player/coach Tom Howley barging his way over the line, although stand-off Leigh Wheatley missed the kick.

It was not long before the University side hit back with a try of their own but Steven Flintoft touched down to put the Romans back ahead. Wheatley was again unsuccessful with the conversion.

A second converted try from the students saw the game turn again but the Romans proved they had pace and power left in the tank, with winger David O’Callaghan getting the ball down, converted by Wheatley.

In the second half, with the Romans rotating their squad, the students began to pull away. They scored four tries without reply before Romans second row Jonny Green grabbed a consolation score.

The club are currently training on Mondays from 7-8pm on the Leafy Lane Astroturf. They are still keen to recruit players of all abilities over the age of 16, as well as sponsors and volunteers.

The Romans’ kit has kindly been sponsored by Samwells of Bath. For more information on the club, email romansrlfc@gmail.com.
