FC ABBEY Meads upset the odds when they stunned Division One side Inter Sandgate 1-0 to win the Chairman’s Trophy.

Man of the match Jake Johns got the only goal for Paul Little’s Division Six champions in the second half at Swindon Supermarine’s Webb’s Wood Stadium.

The victory completes an impressive double for newcomers Abbey, who clinched their league title with a game to spare just under a fortnight ago.

Boss Little said: “I’m over the moon. We’ve not had it easy in this competition and to beat a Division One side in the final is unbelievable.

“I’m flabbergasted at what we’ve achieved this season, really.

“We’re a young side and a new side as well. I knew we’d have a good chance in the league but to win the cup against higher division teams who have played in it for many years is beyond my wildest dreams.”

Inter Sandgate have endured a nightmare season in Division One, finishing bottom of the table after failing to pick up a single point from their 10 fixtures.

However, they have been in devastating form in the Chairman’s Trophy, netting 33 goals in four games en route to the final.

They looked like continuing that against Meads by dominating the opening exchanges but failed to capitalise as Little’s men gradually grew into the game.

The Meads chief reckons that once his team got the measure of their opponents, the victory could have been even more convincing.

Little added: “In the first 10 minutes we were a bit nervous as we knew we were playing a Division One side. They had the better of the play and hit the bar but we settled down after about 20 minutes and the back-line were really strong.

“We were the better side in the second half and deserved to get the win.

“They only had three at back and I could see they were tiring. Our average age is about 20 so we tried to catch them out. We said just keep it tight and don’t concede and try and hit them on the counter.

“We had chances to score a couple more goals but didn’t quite take them but I can’t complain as one was enough in the end.”

The Knockout Cup final comes to a conclusion next Sunday as Division One champions Greyhound look to complete a cup treble when they take on Division Two side Deers Leap at Supermarine.
