PREDICTIONS LEAGUE: Pay-Off Final Preston NE v Swindon

Who believed that we would be in this position at the start of the season?

Who amongst you believed that we would be relegated?

Who believed that you don’t win anything with kids?

Well here we are, on the brink of the one of the most important games in the club’s recent history. The League One play-off final. Wembley awaits.

Forget about the misery of the JPT final in ‘12, forget about that bobble in ‘10. Remember that thrilling match in ’93, the joy of ’90. Focus on the good times as they are about to come back.

Mark Cooper and Lee Power have put together a young squad of players, oozing with talent, on a shoe-string budget, that have defied the odds and expectations of many fans and pundits this season. Flagged for the drop back in August, these kids have worked hard, gelled as a unit, and find themselves just 90 minutes away from promotion to the Championship.

Nobody really expected the Town to get automatic promotion this season, but for a moment it was there, within our grasp. The youthfulness of our squad, at times showed naivety, a lack of concentration. That cost us points that would have made all the difference. Yet Cooper and the boys have stuck to their principles, their game plan. They have learnt, they have evolved and they have become a close knit unit. A Team.

We are the underdogs for this game and I think that will suit us just fine. Preston may have the edge, but they have never won a play-off final. That must be playing on the minds of the fans and the players alike. The expectation of Preston is to push aside this lowly bunch of young lads, but they may be wary, cautious even. Swindon in the eyes of their fans will not be expected to win, the game is Preston’s for the taking.

They will be surprised. Yes we are the underdogs, but we have a pedigree of football and a style of play, that, on it's day, will grace any stage. We have the tenacity, the determination, the guile, the passion and the desire to come out on top.

The Town players must though, play the game and not the occasion. Do that and we WILL prevail. Do that and a new generation of fans will be able to experience an unforgettable journey back along the M4.

I believe.
