DAVID Howell was on course to make the cut at the Alston Open de France, despite shooting a three-over-par 74 in the second round.

The Swindon ace had looked handily-placed after a first round played in tough conditions at Le Golf National, finishing level-par on the opening day in Paris.

However, with the stormy weather still blighting those on course yesterday, Howell slipped well off the pace.

The Broome Manor pro began the day with a birdie three on the first hole but that was swiftly countered by a bogey six on the third.

A run of eight pars followed before Howell dropped over par for the day and the tournament with a bogey five on the 12th.

Things then got drastically worse for the 40-year-old as a double bogey six on the 17th hole saw him finish three over.

Howell was not the only one to struggle as defending champion Graeme McDowell crashed out after a second round horror show of a seven-over 78.
