SWINDON Town’s Liverpool loanee Jordan Williams has been selected for Wales’ upcoming European Championship qualifiers against Cyprus and Israel.

The utility player, who been employed in midfield and defence by Town this season, has been called up by Wales boss Chris Coleman and could make his debut for the senior side, having previously played at under 21 and under 17 level.

Williams’ ascension to senior consideration is rapid. The 19-year-old only made his first appearance for the under 21 side, coached by Town legend Paul Bodin, in September last year against Lithuania.

Now with just five first team appearances at Town under his belt, the Liverpool loanee has been handed his chance with the senior side due a shortage of midfield options for Coleman.

Anfield teammate Joe Allen is out with a hamstring injury picked up in training before Liverpool’s season opener with Stoke, Wigan man Emyr Huws is still absent with the long-term ankle problem he picked up in February and David Vaughan is unavailable due to family issues.

Coleman, speaking at the announcement of his squad hinted that Williams is not just included for the experience and he could have a part to play in the qualifiers “Jordan, in that holding midfield role, or as a centre back, is an option," said the Wales boss.

"He’s on loan at Swindon Town at the moment and getting some football.

“We’ve looked at him and our situation for these two games, both highly pressurised games of football.

“Jordan has played at Anfield, if you play at Liverpool there is always pressure, so that’s why we went down that road.

“He’s also a very good young player.

“He’s played with our younger groups and he is an option for us.”

Williams will travel to Nicosia for the qualifier against Cyprus on Thursday, September 3 and then returns to Wales for the Israel fixture on Saturday, September 6 in Cardiff.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Williams’ call-up will see Town’s fixtures against Newport and Crewe rearranged.

Both games fall within the FIFA international window and Williams is the third Swindon player to be called up for international duty, joining Jordan Stewart (Northern Ireland under 21s) and Yaser Kasim (Iraq).
