WROUGHTON will be hoping to reap a bountiful harvest from the plum tie of the weekend in the county cup when they play host to local giants Salisbury this weekend.

Mark Love’s Wiltshire League outfit are up against the Wessex League Premier Division leaders – the phoenix club created after the downfall of National League outfit Salisbury City – in the opening round of the Wiltshire Senior Cup.

Salisbury, who are managed by TV and radio pundit Steve Claridge, have an average home attendance of 708 so far this season and Wroughton have switched Saturday’s tie to Highworth Town’s Elms ground to cater for a potential bumper crowd.

Meanwhile, Purton manager Justin Miller is giving his team the underdog status tag ahead of their first round clash with Corsham Town this weekend.

On Saturday, Purton make the trip to the Southbank and chief Miller reckons that his team will have their work cut out, with their opponents, managed by former Wootton Bassett chief Jeff Roberts, currently eight points clear at the top of the Western League First Division.

But Purton aren’t in bad shape themselves – they’re currently second in Division One West of the Hellenic League and beat Shortwood United Reserves 7-4 last weekend.

“I don’t know loads about them – Oggy (Paul Hunt, assistant) knows a few of them and a few of the boys know a few of them – but they’re going to be a good a side, so we’ll go there and compete and see what we can do,” said the Purton manager, who will be without goalkeeper Dan Gough.

“They pay money, don’t they? We don’t pay. They’re expected to beat us but we’ve got nothing to lose.

“They’ll be thinking that we’ll be good going forward but they’ll be thinking that they can put a few past us because we conceded four, so we’ll just go there and give it our best shot.

“If we play well, we can beat anyone, so I’m not worried about that.

“It’s the first round and it’s early days but it would be great to have a run in it. Obviously, we’ve got a tough draw away from home but we’d like to progress and we’ll give it our best shot.

“At the end of the day, we just want to build on last week and we want confident performances.”

Elsewhere, Paul Braithwaite’s Bassett kick off their county cup campaign at home to Wiltshire League opposition.

They host Andover-based outfit Ludgershall Sports at the Gerrard Buxton Sports Ground.

New College are also due to be in first round action against Wilts Calne Town but that tie has been postponed.
