SWINDON Town could be in their new training facilities in Highworth as soon as pre-season for the 2016/17 campaign, according to Lee Power.

Despite having signed a three-year contract with Beversbrook last summer to use their facilities for training, Power appears keen to get the club into their own amenities as soon as possible.

Contracts were exchanged between the club and the owners of Twelve Oaks Golf Course back in November, with work on the development set to begin next month.

The fact that Swindon have had to train at Royal Wootton Bassett’s Gerrard Buxton facility on a number of occasions over the winter already due to waterlogged pitches at Beversbrook may have also sped up the need to have their own facility.

Talks with the council are ongoing prior to planning permission being put in to develop the area, which will include several pitches and a revamp of the current clubhouse.

However, the upgrade of the clubhouse may not be required before the club move in to use the site.

“The training ground next month (February) gets (going),” Power told BBC Wiltshire. “We’ve exchanged with the completion on that so we have got to start the works on getting that done, which is exciting for the club but a lot of work.

“There’s a lot going on behind the scenes which is all positive.

“The council talks have started and we’re engaging them about what we are going to do with the site.

“We’re hoping the first team are in there for pre-season.

“Obviously we have got to speak to the pitch contractors and, weather permitting and so on, because we have got to lay surfaces but we are definitely hoping we can get a couple of pitches in in time.

“The facilities are already there for them to get changed. It won’t be anywhere near what we need it to be but I’m hoping it will be. With planning permission and this and that, there is a lot of red tape to go through.”
