SWINDON Supermarine are hoping to be pitch perfect when they host Mangotsfield United at the Webb’s Wood Stadium this evening.

The construction of the new Swindome has been a huge boost to the club but it has caused an issue with the playing surface, with one of the drainage pipes becoming blocked in the building process.

That has been compounded by storms Henry and Imogen in the last week, which led to Marine's home game with Taunton Town being postponed before New College Swindon’s Hellenic League Division One West contest with Carterton was called off on Saturday for the same reason.

Work has been completed to try and resolve the issue and Supermarine boss Dave Webb is keen for tonight’s game to go ahead to prevent a fixture pile-up.

“Where the dome has gone up and they have put an access road in, it has damaged one of the pipes and that has affected part of the pitch,” he said.

“They have had to do some work on that to get the pipe cleared.

“There is one area that is notoriously bad, even in the past, and that is what got the game called off last Saturday against Taunton.

“The rest of the pitch was playable - it was just that one area that was below par.

“With the College game not being on at the weekend, hopefully we can get Tuesday on, but we will have to wait and see.

“It is disappointing not to be playing. We are desperate to play. Especially when you are doing well; you don’t want to stop playing.

“It gives us a chance to recharge the batteries and it was good news for Ash Taylor, who wasn’t available on Saturday, and Connor Thompson, who is away in India with work.”

Mangotsfield head to South Marston sitting 17th in the Southern League Division One South & West table and Webb knows that every game between now and the end of the season is important if they wish to stay in the play-off picture.

“Hopefully we can play and keep things ticking over before playing Marlow at the weekend,” he added.

“We’re looking at every game as one we need to win at the moment.

“Mangotsfield are under new management and they are rebuilding their team there and putting their stamp on things.

“They won’t be easy and they have got some good players there. Our players have just got to go out and continue doing all the good work they are doing.”

This evening's match at the Webb's Wood Stadium is subject to a pitch inspection at 2.15pm.
