A GARY Phillips penalty secured Wroughton’s passage to the final of the Fountain Trophies Senior Knockout Cup after they could not be split from Ludgershall Sport in normal time.

Glenn Armstrong missed a first-half penalty for a Wroughton side who dominated the first half but were pegged back in the second period.

Ludgershall had a player sent off for a second yellow card before the end of normal time and the hosts capitalised in extra time as Chris Balfe gave them the lead.

However, despite the man advantage they were not able to hold onto the lead and conceded a penalty in the first half of time added on to take the game to penalties.

Armstrong dusted himself off after his previous error from the spot to convert the first for Wroughton as the first five of each team netted before Phillips scored the decisive spot kick to claim an 8-7 win.

“We should have put the game to bed before the break really,” said Wroughton assistant manager Paul Bowden, whose side are also in the semi-final of the Faringdon Thursday Memorial Cup.

“They came on stronger in the second half and had a lot of possession.

“Although they didn’t really pressure us after we scored, we went looking for the second goal and conceded a silly penalty.

“It is the first time we have ever made the final of the senior cup and it keeps the players motivated and hopefully we can have some silverware at the end of the season.”

Wroughton will now face either Chippenham Park Development or Melksham Town Reserves in the final after Nigel Tripp’s side beat Corsham Town Reserves 2-1 in their quarter-final.

Meanwhile, in the league Devizes Town Reserves ended Trowbridge Town’s unbeaten run with a 3-1 defeat.

Having conceded an early penalty, Ali Bradley restored parity for the visitors before Robbie Whyte converted a penalty won by Jack Fisher on the stroke of half time.

Jamie Walters scored in the second half to complete the win and inflict a first defeat in 19 on the hosts.

Shrewton United remain top after a 3-1 win over Melksham Town Reserves, with Malmesbury Victoria on their coat tails following a 2-1 success away at Trowbridge Wanderers.
