ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low says the journey begins again having signed off their league-winning campaign with a comfortable win at home to Marlborough.

Having joined the club three years ago, it was always in Low’s plans to target promotion to South West One East a feat that was achieved this term.

Their Southern Counties South season was rounded off on Saturday as they beat Marlborough 50-10 at Ballards Ash.

And Low hopes his experience of guiding Swindon to promotion to South West One East alongside Neil Loader four years ago will hold him in good stead.

“I have my ideas of what needs to be done over the summer but the foundation for us has always been the key aspect,” he said.

“Three years ago we targeted going up this year and we have been able to do that.

“It was this year that we pencilled in (for promotion) when I first came to work at the club.

“There has been a lot of hard work from the committee and the club to get the facilities right and then the hard work on the pitch from the players as well.

“It’s been a good couple of years but the journey starts again.”

Bassett’s third team also secured the Dorset & Wilts Three North title at the weekend, while the second string finished fifth in Dorset & Wilts One North and Low believes that strength in depth is key to any success next season.

“The foundation that has been laid across the whole season with the whole senior group has really led to the success we have seen this year,” he added.

“It has not been about having a group of 18 or 20 players who can play rugby, it is about a lot more than that.

“We mention the firsts, seconds and thirds but I can’t underestimate the work the colts have been doing.

“We haven’t put an emphasis on any of the teams, we haven’t put an emphasis on we must win leagues or we must do this; it is about wanting people to play rugby.”
