SOME of the heroes that provided arguably the greatest moment in Swindon Town’s history will be reuniting next month to help raise money for local charity Clivey and Twist.

Members of Town’s famous 1969 League Cup-winning side, as well as another mystery guest, will be thrilling fans with tales of their 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the old Wembley – Swindon’ first major trophy success – at a charity fundraising night at the Marriott Hotel on Monday, July 11.

Clivey and Twist supports young people in Penhill and next month’s event, which will be hosted by ex-Swindon striker and BBC Wiltshire radio presenter Sam Parkin, has been organised with the help of charity trustee Cliff Puffett, who spent three years as chairman at the County Ground.

“I know it’s going to be a one-off event, never to be repeated, but it’s a way of paying tribute to those guys that produced that wonderful result against Arsenal,” said Puffett.

“So far, we’ve got Don Rogers, John Trollope, Joe Butler, Frank Burrows, Roger Smart and possibly Peter Downsborough coming. Stan Harland, who was the captain, and John Smith have passed away since but we should have a great line-up.

“I’ve done the full journey from the terraces to the boardroom. I was just a fan in ’69 and 30 at the time.

“I’ve been to all of the Wembley finals and I must admit, it didn’t top the Leicester one (the 4-3 First Division play-off final victory over Leicester City in 1993) but it was an incredible game.

“Really, it’s a final tribute to what we call the ’69 heroes. This certainly was the most memorable moment in the club’s history.”

Swindon Town historian Dick Mattick will be raiding his archives to provide memorabilia of that storied victory over the Gunners 48 years ago, whilst Clivey and Twist patron Rt Revd Lee Rayfield, the Bishop of Swindon, will also be in attendance.

Charity manager Satnam Bains added: “We’re based in Penhill, which is in the top five per cent of deprived communities in England.

“We work with 18 and 19-year-olds and it’s basically a drop-in youth centre. These are the kids that just hang around on the streets and so on, so we try to take them off and get them in a safe place.

“Each year, our big thing is fundraising and thanks to Cliff, we’ve managed to keep our heads above water.”

Entry to next month’s event with Town's ’69 heroes is priced at £25 per person or £250 for a table of 10 and includes a light two-course supper.

Tickets are available by contacting Clivey and Twist manager Bains (07788 942851 or manager@clivey.co.uk), youth worker Aaron Webb (07825 180733 or youthworker@clivey.co.uk) or by emailing Puffett (cliffpuffett@tiscali.co.uk).
