NICK Morris endured a major heart-in-mouth moment when he hit the dirt during Swindon Robins’ clash with the Lakeside Hammers on Thursday night but thankfully, lady luck was on his side.

Two-and-a-half weeks after suffering a painful ankle injury in a fall during his side’s win at Leicester Lions, the 22-year-old momentarily left his colleagues fearing the worst when he crashed again during heat six of Swindon’s 52-41 triumph over Lakeside at the Abbey Stadium.

But Morris jumped straight back into action and weighed in with five more points as Alun Rossiter’s side assuredly saw off their Essex visitors.

The Aussie says that he’s still not back to full fitness but was relieved that he managed to avoid further exacerbating his injury.

“I kind of forgot about it when I was crashing but just before I touched the air fence, I tucked it away so I didn’t tangle it up – luckily, I didn’t twist it or anything so I can’t complain,” said Morris.

“My ankle’s probably about 60 or 70 per cent right and we’ve got a bit of time to give it rest, even though I practiced yesterday.

“A bit more rest will be good and hopefully it keeps getting better.”

The Robins ascended to third in the Elite League table with victory over Lakeside, who they are now level on points with.

Thursday’s clash had been suggested as a meeting that was pivotal to Swindon’s play-off hopes but with 13 fixtures to go for his team, Morris believes that it is too early to label certain fixtures ‘must-win’.

“I think it’s definitely too early to be saying that but we needed a win, just to keep comfortable,” he said.

“We’re in a good spot. We’re equal second and we’re a few meetings up on everyone else but as long as we keep winning at home now and pick up points away; we’ve been pretty consistent all year.

“We’ve had a few bad meetings but we’ve had a lot of good ones as well and I think we’ll be alright.

“All the boys did good (on Thursday). It shows that if you’ve got a good reserve, it makes all the difference and Wrighty (Charles Wright) was on it and Stefan (Nielsen) put the points on too.

“It makes it easier on the whole team if you’ve got everyone scoring.”

Meanwhile, Swindon skipper Jason Doyle is in Prague tonight for the Mitas Czech SGP.

The Australian goes into the fourth race of the season lying in eighth place in the overall standings, 14 points behind leader and reigning champion Tai Woffinden.

Doyle finished runner-up to Peter Kildemand in the opening meeting and will be looking to return to the podium having missed out on the last two occasions.
